Fairfax County Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: What equipment is needed to trap a rat?

One of the most efficient methods that can be used to get rid of rats is by using traps. In order to do this effectively, you will need to have the correct equipment with you. The most important of the equipment is the trap that you will use.

There are many different types of traps in stores today that promise to help you in catching these rodents that may have found access to your home. A one door or hinged trap or a snap trap are known to be some of the most efficient traps that can perform this task efficiently.

Other than the trap, you will also need to have bait. One of the best types of bait that will quickly attract the rats and get them into the trap is peanut butter or the infamous cheese. The point of the bait is to lure the rats into the trap so that they get caught. You should refrain from using poisoned bait because if the rat dies in the trap, it poses more health risks than it did before when it was alive.

You will also need to have containers with secure lids or polythene material in which you will put the rats once you get them out of the trap and throw them away. This is especially important in case the rats die because you don’t want to have carcasses lying around recklessly. In the same vein, you will need to have a thick pair of gloves and a face mask. The gloves you will need to wear when handling the rats that have been trapped in the trap, whether dead or alive, the same goes for the face mask. These two items will also be valuable in the process of cleaning up any droppings and urine left behind by the rats in the area where you will have set the trap.

While on the cleaning process after the trapping, you will need a vacuum cleaner as well to use in cleaning up all the areas where the rats may have been in. This might mean that the entire house will get a thorough cleaning in order to get rid of any rodent left overs completely.

After vacuum cleaning the house, you will also need to disinfect. This is just precautionary in order to completely remove any traces of rats and the leftovers that they may have left behind in the form of urine, droppings and their hairs. This process will get rid of any organisms that may have rubbed off the rats that may cause diseases such as salmonella. Part of this cleaning will also require that you have scrubbing materials and brushes so that the task is well and thoroughly done.

It is much easier to contract the help of pest and animal control professionals to help with the removal of rats from your house. This is because they often come with their own equipment and carry out all the necessary steps efficiently and with the required expertise.
